Proof
of the Broken Chord (pdf)
Proof
of the Broken Chord was inspired by a strange little abandoned building
across the street from my home in Oakland, CA. Neighborhood stories
about the buildings that used to be on the blocks surrounding say that
in earlier times these shacks were the local whorehouses. Coming and
going from this building were feral cats. Without much stretch of imagination,
one could see other entities coming and going as well.
Using this building as a springboard, Proof of the Broken Chord developed
as an abstract narrative about the mundane lives of the supernatural;
urban spirits dwelling just out of the corner of the eye. This presentation
introduces a small grouping of personae: minor demons, prometheus, the
ferryman, and the corporal. All are connected by the intersection where
the little shack is found. This cycle of work combines paintings, glass
panels and wood carvings in a play between the narrative and physical
space; object and content.
The limited palette of greyscale (warm and cool) in the paintings interacts
with the monochromatic nature of the flashed glass panels and plate
glass works. The combination of muted palette and heavily worked line
helps create a dreamlike quality in the works that carries across the
changes of media. The carvings function both as icon object and to carry
the work fully into the physical realm.
